Nigerians Call for Fresh Tests on NNPC Fuel Over Efficiency Concerns

Nigerians have urged the Federal Government to reassess the quality of petrol sold across the country following a viral video alleging that fuel from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) burns faster than expected.

The controversy emerged after a content creator claimed to have tested fuel efficiency by comparing petrol purchased from an NNPC station in Ojodu Berger with that from an MRS station, which sourced its supply from Dangote refinery.

According to his video, a generator running on Dangote fuel lasted for 30 mins while, the one using NNPC fuel lasted 17 mins.

In response, NNPC dismissed the claims as misleading, asserting that its fuel meets all industry standards. The company’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, described the video as an unreliable experiment lacking scientific credibility.

NNPC also clarified that the fuel in question, sold at its Ojodu Berger outlet, was actually sourced from the Dangote refinery, a statement that some Dangote officials refuted.

“This claim is baseless and not backed by any verified research. The video presents an unscientific and flawed experiment,” NNPC stated.

The video has triggered widespread reactions, with many Nigerians urging regulatory agencies to conduct independent tests to verify fuel efficiency. Some have called on the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to intervene and conduct standardized experiments.

A social media user remarked, “The authorities should step in and conduct proper testing to clear any doubts.”

Others questioned the reliability of the viral experiment, noting that factors such as generator condition and fuel usage settings could impact consumption. However, several individuals insisted that their personal experiences align with the claims made in the video.

PETROAN Backs NNPC, Assures Quality Compliance

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has thrown its support behind NNPC, stating that independent tests have confirmed that the company’s fuel meets industry standards.

“We routinely conduct quality checks, and NNPC fuel has consistently met regulatory benchmarks,” PETROAN stated, urging caution against spreading unverified claims.

As debates continue, the public awaits a response from relevant authorities regarding further fuel quality investigations.
