A stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, organised by the WINGS Foundation, has left 35 children dead and six others critically injured.
The event, hosted at Islamic High School, Basorun, on Wednesday, turned tragic when an overwhelming crowd reportedly caused chaos at the venue.
The non-governmental organisation, founded by former queen of the Ooni of Ife, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, organised the event in collaboration with Ibadan-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat.
While the organisers expected 5,000 children, over 7,500 participants thronged the venue.
Eyewitness accounts revealed the stampede occurred as attendees rushed to gain entry after the gates were opened.
Survivors and their parents described harrowing experiences, with some arriving as early as 5:30 am to secure spots for their children.
One parent, Iya Ayomide, recounted, “For almost five minutes, I couldn’t see my daughter. She was trapped under a pile of people. I managed to rescue her, and she is now recovering.”
Other parents expressed regret for attending the event, blaming themselves for the tragedy.
The Oyo State Police Command has detained seven individuals, including Prophetess Silekunola and the school principal, Fasasi Abdulahi, as part of an investigation into the incident.
Police Public Relations Officer Adewale Osifeso confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Homicide Section.
He assured the public of justice and heightened police presence in the area to maintain security.
In the aftermath, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, disclosed that the corpses of the deceased children had been handed over to their families.
Victims had been treated at various hospitals, including Patnas Hospital, Western Hospital, and the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
The tragedy also left Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM, hospitalised. According to his brother, Fuhad Hamzat, the shock rendered him unconscious.
Agidigbo FM clarified its role as a media partner rather than an organiser of the event and stated efforts were made to warn the public about the overcrowded venue.
Condolences have poured in from various quarters.
President Bola Tinubu expressed sadness over the incident, urging a comprehensive investigation and stricter safety measures for public events.
His wife, Oluremi Tinubu, prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and comfort for grieving families.
The Ooni of Ife’s palace also sympathised with the families of the victims, praising Silekunola’s past efforts to support children but urging improved planning for such events.
The statement highlighted the need for stricter safety protocols to prevent future tragedies.
