The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has criticised the Federal Government’s approval of a 50% increase in telecom tariffs, warning that it may resort to strike action if the decision is not reversed.
Speaking on Thursday, TUC President Festus Osifo expressed concerns over the timing of the hike, arguing that it adds financial strain on Nigerians already grappling with economic difficulties.
He insisted that the government should focus on stabilising the forex market rather than passing rising costs onto consumers.
Osifo explained that the union is still in the consultation phase, with leadership meetings planned before a definitive strike date is set.
He stressed that while telecom operators face higher operational costs, increasing tariffs is not a sustainable solution.
Instead, he urged the government to implement policies that reduce business expenses and encourage economic stability.
The telecom tariff increase has drawn opposition from labour unions and activists.
While the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) initially scheduled a protest, it was later suspended after negotiations with the government.
A 10-member committee has been formed to review the issue, with a report expected in two weeks.
