The House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward reforming Nigeria’s polytechnic education system, as a bill seeking amendments to the Federal Polytechnic Act progressed to its second reading on Tuesday.
The bill, jointly sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Lagos lawmaker Fuad Laguda, aims to redefine the scope of polytechnic education, ensuring it meets modern educational and industry standards.
Speaking on the proposed changes, Laguda stressed the need for stronger governance and expanded responsibilities within polytechnics. He noted that the bill proposes Greater industry collaboration by including key stakeholders like the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) in governing councils, a revised administrative framework to improve efficiency and decision-making, and an enhanced curriculum to equip students with skills that align with technological advancements and global trends.
Following a voice vote, the bill was approved for further legislative scrutiny and referred to the Committee on Polytechnic and Higher Technical Education for in-depth evaluation.
