The Nigerian Optometric Association has urged the Federal Government to prioritise eye health by employing optometrists across all 774 local government areas, citing the alarming rise in glaucoma cases.
Speaking at a press briefing in Uyo during World Glaucoma Week, the association’s president, Chimeziri Anderson, highlighted the urgent need for early detection and treatment, as over 90% of glaucoma cases in Nigeria remain undiagnosed until significant vision loss occurs. He stressed that the disease is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in the country, affecting between 4.6% and 5.02% of the population.
To reduce barriers to treatment, Anderson also called for government-backed incentives, such as import duty waivers on essential medical supplies, including lenses and pharmaceutical products. He further advocated for stronger collaboration between optometrists and ophthalmologists to improve patient outcomes.
Echoing these concerns, Afekhide Omoti, Chairman of the National Eye Health Committee, warned that glaucoma is prevalent among Nigerians over 40, yet many remain unaware of their condition until it is too late. He encouraged regular eye screenings as a preventive measure and commended ongoing awareness campaigns.
