Political Tension Deepens as Yahaya Bello Seeks Police Action Over Alleged Death Plot Accusation

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has called on Nigeria’s police leadership to investigate what he describes as a dangerous trend of political smear campaigns, following recent allegations by embattled Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In a petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Bello’s legal representatives condemned what they termed a calculated attempt to incite public unrest and damage his reputation. The complaint stems from a public accusation by Akpoti-Uduaghan, who alleged that a high-level plot involving Bello and Senate President Godswill Akpabio was underway to end her life.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, currently suspended from the Senate, made the explosive claim during a community visit in Kogi State. Her comments have since sparked backlash from government officials and legal experts, who argue the remarks could stoke political tensions in an already sensitive environment.

Bello’s camp is now pressing for swift action, requesting that authorities summon the senator to present any credible evidence behind her claim. They argue that, should her statements prove unsubstantiated, legal proceedings for criminal defamation and incitement should follow.

Adding weight to the petition, another legal representative from Bello’s team issued a separate letter demanding public retractions and formal apologies in national publications where the remarks were quoted.

Meanwhile, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal counsel has stood firm, insisting she is ready to present proof and welcomes an impartial investigation. “There is nothing to fear. The matter is already with the police,” her lawyer said in response to media inquiries.

Analysts say the case underscores the growing friction within Kogi’s political landscape, where personal rivalries and unresolved grievances continue to complicate governance and security.

As of now, the police have not issued any public comment on the petition or revealed plans to take formal steps regarding the matter.
