The All Progressives Congress (APC) is working to ensure that Nigerians living overseas can one day participate in the country’s elections, according to the party’s national chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.
Speaking in Paris during the inauguration of APC’s France chapter executives, Ganduje expressed the party’s intent to collaborate with lawmakers and key institutions to push forward the long-standing conversation on diaspora voting.
He emphasised the need to politically integrate Nigerians abroad, noting that their contributions to national development deserve recognition beyond remittances.
Ganduje also praised the current state of the APC, claiming the party’s unity and direction under President Bola Tinubu have led to a wave of new support, including defections from rival political camps. He said the increased availability of funds for development projects at state and local government levels is a result of the administration’s economic reforms.
Looking ahead to 2027, Ganduje voiced confidence in Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term, citing growing public and party support.
Also speaking at the event, Hajjiya Amina Baba-Suzuki, who now heads the party’s France chapter, called for deeper engagement with diaspora chapters. She stressed that Nigerians living abroad are not just economic stakeholders but should also have a political voice in their homeland.
Meanwhile, a proposed legislative bill that would allow citizens living outside Nigeria to vote in future elections is still under review at the National Assembly. Though it has not yet passed the second reading, advocates see it as a step toward strengthening democratic participation.
