The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has blamed the Central Bank of Nigeria for halting its involvement in infrastructural projects at public universities since 2014.
This was revealed during an interview by ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, aired on Channels Television.
Osodeke revealed that the CBN actively funded projects in universities during the tenure of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the former governor of the CBN and presently the active Emir of Kano.
Sanusi’s tenure from 2009 to 2014 saw the execution of several projects across federal and state universities in Nigeria under the CBN’s community development funds.
“The biggest building in my university was funded by the CBN under Sanusi’s administration,” Osodeke remarked.
However, Osodeke lamented that since Sanusi’s tenure ended, no projects have been initiated by the CBN.
He criticised subsequent CBN governors, including Godwin Emefiele, and current governor Olayemi Cardoso, for failing to continue the infrastructural efforts Sanusi started.
Osodeke questioned why the CBN had ceased using the available funds, noting that if the initiative had been sustained, the current infrastructure deficit in public universities could have been avoided.
“There’s a new CBN governor now, but nothing is being done,” he added, challenging the current administration to revive the project funding.
