ASUU Predicts Possible Disruption in 2025

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of potential unrest in the education sector if the Federal Government fails to address unresolved issues.

ASUU, through its Ibadan chapter chairman, Prof. Ayo Akinwole, criticised the government for neglecting agreements, including revitalising universities, settling withheld salaries, and paying Earned Academic Allowances.

The Union described the uninterrupted academic calendar in 2024 as a result of its sacrifices rather than government effort.

The Union also rejected plans to replace the education tax with a “development levy,” cautioning that it would reduce funding for public universities.

Furthermore, ASUU criticised the 2025 budget for allocating only 7% to education, falling below the global standard of 15-20%.

ASUU called for urgent action to improve funding and warned of possible industrial action if the issues persist.
