The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised concerns over what it describes as attempts to undermine Nigeria’s public universities.
Speaking at ASUU’s 2024 Heroes Day in Abuja, National President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke accused the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of seeking to destabilize Nigeria’s public education sector.
He further lamented the Federal Government’s delay in renegotiating the ASUU-FGN 2009 Agreement, noting that despite multiple Memoranda of Understanding and Action, the agreement remains unresolved.
Osodeke expressed disappointment over the government’s enforcement of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) in universities, despite a Federal Executive Council decision to remove it.
Additionally, he highlighted the withholding of three and a half months’ salaries, unpaid promotions, and the Earned Academic Allowance owed to ASUU members.
During the event, ASUU announced the introduction of N500,000 PhD grants for its members, awarded based on proposal assessments.
The union also expressed solidarity with members facing persecution at state universities and honored notable figures for their contributions to Nigeria’s public university education.
