The Australian government has appealed to its citizens to reconsider traveling to Nigeria due to heightened security risks, including terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade warned of potential attacks targeting public spaces like hotels, markets, and transport hubs.
Citizens were advised against visiting states such as Borno, Kaduna, and Rivers and to exercise caution in Abuja.
This comes as Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics reported over 2.2 million kidnappings between May 2023 and April 2024, with ransom payments exceeding ₦2.2 trillion.
