The Autonomous National Electoral Commission of Benin (CENA) has sought support from Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as it prepares for its most demanding election cycle in 2026.
A 12-member delegation from CENA, led by its President, Dr Sacca Lafia, arrived in Abuja on Monday for a study tour aimed at understanding Nigeria’s electoral strategies.
Benin is set to conduct legislative, local, and presidential elections within a tight three-month window—January and April 2026, respectively.
INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, welcomed the delegation and affirmed Nigeria’s willingness to assist.
He highlighted CENA’s focus on Nigeria’s legal frameworks, election material production, technology adoption, poll official training, budgeting, stakeholder engagement, and observer accreditation processes.
“CENA will be conducting three elections for the first time in its history.
Their visit focuses on studying our procedures to prepare for this significant challenge,” Yakubu stated.
Dr Lafia praised INEC’s support, describing the visit as pivotal to CENA’s preparations, emphasising on the importance of learning from Nigeria’s experiences to ensure the seamless execution of Benin’s upcoming elections.
