The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into the allegations of bribery involving officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) related to Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, following his conviction for naira abuse.
This investigation follows a viral audio recording, shared by social media influencer Martins Otse, a.k.a. VeryDarkMan, in which Bobrisky claimed that his godfather, in collaboration with top NCS officials, arranged for him to serve his six-month prison sentence in a private apartment rather than in the custodial facility.
In response, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has suspended two senior official, both Deputy Controllers at Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos, as well as another officer, from Afikpo, Ebonyi State.
Their suspension allows for a thorough investigation into the bribery allegations.
Additionally, Deputy Controller of Corrections at Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abuja, has been suspended for allegedly receiving money on behalf of an inmate.
The House of Representatives, during a plenary session led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, passed a resolution to investigate the claims raised by VeryDarkMan, which include accusations that Bobrisky avoided serving his sentence at the correctional facility by paying a bribe of ₦15 million.
The motion, sponsored by Akwa Ibom lawmaker Patrick Umoh, highlighted concerns over the alleged corruption within key law enforcement agencies, noting the potential damage to Nigeria’s international reputation.
The House’s Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions have been tasked with investigating and are expected to report their findings within three legislative weeks.
