Bureau De Change Operator Sues EFCC N1.2bn Over Illegal Detention.

A Bureau De Change operator, Suleiman Sani, has filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), alleging illegal arrest, torture, and prolonged detention without trial.

The suit was filed by Sani’s lawyer, Edwin Anikwem (SAN), seeking ₦200 million in general damages and ₦1 billion in exemplary damages for the violation of his client’s fundamental rights.

The case, brought under Section 46 of the 1999 Constitution, also requests an order directing the EFCC to issue a public apology for the infringement on Sani’s rights.

According to a 33-paragraph affidavit, Sani has been detained at the EFCC’s Lagos office since June 1, 2024, following an invitation related to his business dealings.

Despite answering the EFCC’s questions about his Bureau De Change transactions, Sani claims he was deemed unsatisfactory, arrested, and detained withoutbut i did about 4 to 55 news today being informed of any charges.

His health has reportedly deteriorated due to poor detention conditions, and he has developed an abscess and high blood pressure. Despite his complaints, no medical care has been provided.

Sani’s business has been shut down for over 150 days, causing significant financial losses. His family’s well-being has also been severely affected, with his children out of school and his elderly mother in distress.

The applicant seeks immediate release from detention and a court order declaring his detention unlawful.

He is also demanding compensation and a public apology from the EFCC for the violation of his fundamental rights.
