The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, is heavily involved in over 100 lawsuits filed by staff recently dismissed under the bank’s re-organisation, initiated by the administration of Bola Tinubu.
It is reported that the lawsuits, filed at the National Industrial Court in Abuja, challenge what the former employees describe as “unjust termination” of their employment.
Recalls that the CBN laid off over 200 staff members on May 24, 2024, citing “re-organisation”.
The affected personnel are, however, seeking the payment of their entitlements, including salaries, allowances, and other benefits.
Lead counsel, Mr. Ola Olanipekun, SAN, representing some of the dismissed staff, stated that the court is being asked to enforce the workers’ rights to a fair hearing.
He highlighted that the CBN’s actions have caused damages amounting to hundreds of millions of naira, and that the claimants are demanding N30 million as litigation costs, with a 21% post-judgement interest per annum on all awarded sums until fully paid.
Olanipekun reiterated that the lawsuits are corroborated by a 27-paragraph affidavit, with proceedings initiated through an Originating Summons dated August 22, 2024.
