China, Nigeria Strengthen Bilateral Ties Amid High-Level Meetings

Nigeria and China are taking steps to bolster their bilateral relationship, focusing on trade, investment, infrastructure, and security.

This was highlighted during the visit of China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, who arrived in Abuja on January 8, 2025, for a series of strategic meetings with Nigerian officials, including President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar.

Ambassador Tuggar reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to deepening ties with China, recalling agreements signed during President Tinubu’s visit to China in September 2024.

Wang Yi expressed China’s interest in enhancing collaboration with Nigeria, in line with discussions from the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

During a meeting at the State House, President Tinubu urged China to increase the $2 billion currency swap agreement to boost trade and fast-track infrastructure development.

He also called for a review of China’s $50 billion aid package for Africa, citing the continent’s expansive developmental needs.

“We demand more in the area of currency swaps to match our ambitious programmes. Our bond must grow stronger and unbreakable,” Tinubu remarked, emphasising Nigeria’s readiness to partner on critical projects.

He further advocated for China’s support in securing a permanent seat for Nigeria on the United Nations Security Council.

Wang Yi praised Nigeria’s leadership and affirmed China’s commitment to supporting regional stability and economic development.

He also highlighted China’s focus on job creation and infrastructure investments in Nigeria, promising collaboration through the Chinese National Development Bank.
