Christians Mark Ash Wednesday, Ushering in the Lenten Season

For many Christians, Ash Wednesday serves as a solemn reminder of life’s transient nature and the need for spiritual renewal. It marks the start of the Lenten season, a period of 40 days devoted to prayer, fasting, and acts of charity.

In churches across Nigeria, worshippers gathered to receive ashes on their foreheads—a symbolic gesture reflecting repentance and humility.

This tradition, especially prominent in the Catholic Church, involves using ashes made from palm fronds blessed on the previous Palm Sunday.

During Lent, many believers choose to give up certain foods, habits, or luxuries as a form of self-discipline, while others focus on deepening their faith through increased devotion and service to others. The essence of the season is to prepare spiritually for Easter, drawing inspiration from Jesus Christ’s time of fasting and reflection in the wilderness.
