Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal, has urged the Federal Government to establish trauma centres nationwide to support victims of road traffic accidents.

Speaking at the 13th annual conference of the Kwapda Road Safety Demand Foundation and the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in Abuja, Justice Dongban-Mensem highlighted Africa’s alarming road safety statistics.

Citing the WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023, she noted that Africa records 19.5 road traffic fatalities per 100,000 people, compared to Europe’s 6.5.

“A clarion call is for the support for building a Trauma Centre to serve as a first point of respite for road crash victims. Our aspiration in this regard is yet to be realised,” she appealed.

The justice also reflected on her personal loss, recounting the tragic death of her son in a hit-and-run incident 13 years ago, which inspired the founding of the KRSD Foundation.

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, noted that 1.19 million lives are lost annually to road crashes and mentioned the FRSC Mobile App, launched in September 2024, to improve road safety reporting and response.
