The Federal High Court in Lagos has set October 14, 2024, as the date to decide on the bail applications for four journalists accused of false information about Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) and its CEO, Segun Agbaje.
The journalists whose names are Precious Eze, Olawale Rotimi, Rowland Olonishuwa, and Seun Odunlami, they were arraigned on charges of cyberstalking and disseminating false information.
The charges stem from allegations that the defendants, in August 2024, used social media to spread misleading reports about Agbaje and GTCO, including claims of a ₦1 trillion scam. They pleaded not guilty to the charges.
During Thursday’s proceedings, the defence counsel, O. A. Afolabi, urged the court to grant bail, arguing the charges are bailable.
However, the prosecution, led by Emmanuel Jackson, opposed the applications, labeling the defendants as flight risks.
Justice Ayokunle Faji will deliver his ruling on October 14, with the defendants remaining in custody until then.
