The President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has pledged support for President Bola Tinubu’s energy transition initiative from petroleum products to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
Speaking at a recent event, Dangote commended President Tinubu’s leadership in pursuing energy efficiency and also, highlighted his company’s commitment to this shift, aligning it with Nigeria’s net-zero emissions target under the Paris Agreement.
He however urged private sector stakeholders to back the government’s efforts.
Dangote highlighted that the company’s early adoption of CNG has positioned it as the largest operator of CNG trucks in Nigeria.
This initiative, he noted, aligns with President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” aimed at achieving energy independence and creating a more secure energy future for Nigeria.
“We are now using CNG vehicles, especially with the new policy of the Federal Government, launched under the Renewed Hope Agenda by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We are committed to a cleaner and greener future,” Dangote said.
President Tinubu, in his remarks, stressed the importance of leveraging Nigeria’s natural gas resources in transportation, describing it as an economic necessity.
He described the adoption of CNG for transportation as an economic imperative, signaling a major shift in the country’s energy and public transport strategy.
Meanwhile, Dangote Cement has solidified its leadership in the CNG sector with an over $280 million investment, reflecting its commitment to mitigating climate change and advancing towards a low-carbon economy.
Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement Plc, Arvind Pathak, outlined the company’s long-term plan to transition its entire fleet to CNG-powered trucks.
“By mid-2026, Dangote Cement aims to operate a fleet predominantly powered by CNG. To facilitate this transformation, we are investing in expanding our CNG fuelling infrastructure, ensuring that our growing fleet has reliable access to CNG as our fuel,” Pathak explained.
He added that the company’s investments in CNG infrastructure are helping Nigeria transition to cleaner fuels, citing the CNG station at Obajana as a key example.
The station, capable of refuelling over 3,000 trucks, is complemented by a second station under development in Ibese to further support fleet operations.
The Dangote Group’s commitment to CNG and the government’s emphasis on leveraging natural gas resources signify a unified effort towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for Nigeria.
