In a recent address at the University of Calabar’s 50th anniversary celebrations, Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, emphasised the urgent need to reform outdated academic programs in Nigerian universities.

Speaking at the university’s convocation ceremony, Kalu pointed out that many courses being taught today fail to align with the demands of modern industries, particularly in the face of rapid technological advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI).

The legislator noted that universities must move beyond traditional classroom-based education and focus on cultivating practical, problem-solving skills that address current societal challenges. He stressed that fields such as cybersecurity, AI, and data science should be integrated into university curricula to prepare students for the evolving job market.

Kalu criticised the emphasis on CGPA and traditional academic metrics, suggesting that universities should prioritise education that fosters tangible skills over theoretical knowledge alone. He also raised concerns about the lack of university research initiatives focused on local issues like food security, healthcare, and infrastructure, arguing that such research should produce real-world solutions.

He called for universities to adapt their programs in areas like law and engineering, advocating for the incorporation of technologies like blockchain and robotics to ensure graduates are equipped to contribute meaningfully to both national and global progress.

The Deputy Speaker concluded by urging university lecturers to recognise the critical role they play in shaping future leaders, who will be responsible for influencing national policies and driving change in various sectors.
