The Council of Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) convened its 93rd ordinary session on Thursday at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja, focusing on governance, economic policies, and regional integration.
Chaired by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, the session addressed key regional challenges affecting member states.
In his opening remarks, ECOWAS President Omar Touray commended Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and the country for their steadfast support of the bloc.
Touray outlined the agenda, which covered 30 critical issues, including trade, security, agriculture, and regional stability.
He emphasised the need to address these concerns, particularly in light of declining community remittances, with only 40% of expected contributions received over the past six years.
The ECOWAS President also acknowledged the peaceful elections held this year in Liberia, Senegal, Togo, and Ghana, hailing them as significant achievements for democratic progress in the region.
Touray urged member states to reaffirm their commitment to ECOWAS principles and collaborate towards achieving sustainable growth and stability.
