The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has called on the Federal High Court to reject former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele’s move seeking to prevent the seizure of his assets.

These include $2.04 million shares and various prime properties.

In a legal battle over asset forfeiture, Emefiele filed a motion through his counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olalekan Ojo to stop the EFCC from confiscating his assets, arguing that the agency lacked sufficient grounds to do so.

However, the EFCC insists that the properties and shares are proceeds of financial crimes, thus subject to seizure under anti-corruption laws.

The case involves high-value properties and shares linked to Emefiele, which the EFCC believes were acquired through illicit means during his tenure as CBN Governor.

In response, Justice Dipeolu has adjourned till Oct. 11th for his ruling on the application.

Meanwhile, the court’s decision will be closely monitored as it may set a precedent for similar cases involving high-profile individuals and the seizure of assets tied to corruption allegations.
