The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated an investigation into transactions carried out during the tenure of former Edo State Governor.

Godwin Obaseki, who left office on November 12 after serving for eight years, has expressed readiness to cooperate with the EFCC, stating he has nothing to fear.

Sources within the commission disclosed that the probe focuses on contracts awarded to Obaseki during his administration.

While Obaseki has not been directly linked to any irregularities, investigators are pursuing leads on transactions allegedly conducted through intermediaries.

The EFCC recently arrested five officials from Obaseki’s government, including the former Accountant General, Julius Anelu, over significant withdrawals from the state treasury.

Meanwhile, Edo’s new governor, Monday Okpebholo, has set up a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to scrutinise the previous administration’s activities.

Responding to allegations, Obaseki has stated his readiness to cooperate with the EFCC, insisting he is not afraid of any probe.

However, the EFCC maintains that former governors are routinely placed on its watch list to prevent them from leaving the country during investigations.

Attempts to reach the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
