President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of minors detained over their participation in the #EndBadGovernance protests, following widespread public outrage over their treatment.
The directive was announced by Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, who stated that the President’s orders included releasing the minors without affecting ongoing legal proceedings.
Tinubu also instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to ensure the minors’ welfare and facilitate their reunification with their families.
The minors, who were charged with treason after being detained in various states, appeared gaunt and distressed during their recent court appearance.
Nigerians, including human rights activists and former political candidates, expressed outrage over the detention of these minors for over eight weeks.
The presiding judge granted them N10 million bail each.
In response to public condemnation, Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi directed the police to transfer the case files to his office for further review.
