The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has taken a firm stance against MultiChoice Nigeria, demanding an explanation for its sudden decision to increase subscription fees for DStv and GOtv.
Subscribers were recently met with a price adjustment notice, with the DStv Premium package surging from ₦37,000 to ₦44,500, while Compact+ subscribers now face a fee of ₦30,000 instead of ₦25,000. The changes are set to take effect on March 1, 2025, triggering backlash from consumers and regulatory scrutiny.
In response, the FCCPC has summoned MultiChoice’s Chief Executive Officer for an investigative hearing on February 27, 2025. The commission is questioning the justification for these frequent price hikes and assessing whether the company is engaging in anti-competitive practices.
According to FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, there are growing concerns that MultiChoice applies different pricing strategies in various countries, raising fairness issues within Nigeria’s pay-TV market. The commission warns that failure to provide a satisfactory explanation could result in sanctions or other regulatory actions.
With public frustration mounting, the FCCPC reassured consumers that it is working alongside other industry regulators to prevent unfair business practices and maintain competitive pricing in Nigeria’s digital entertainment sector.
