The Federal Government has launched a state-of-the-art surveillance room to monitor the Third Mainland Bridge and its surrounding areas.
This development was announced by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, during an on-site assessment in Lagos on Thursday.
The control room will be staffed by personnel from the Army, Navy, Police, and local security forces, with dedicated boats and vehicles ensuring a swift five-minute response time to incidents.
Similar security measures will be implemented on major highways, including Lagos-Calabar, Sokoto-Badagry, and Abuja-Kano, among others.
Umahi also announced plans for solar lighting on all major roads to improve night visibility and stimulate economic activity.
He reported that the first section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is nearing completion and will be concessioned for operation and maintenance.
Senator Peter Nwebonyi praised the initiative, stating that the CCTV system would enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians while deterring criminal activities.
He urged road users to adhere to traffic laws for overall safety.
Senator Osita Ngwu commended the government’s infrastructure efforts, particularly the coastal road section in Ondo, while emphasising the importance of safety and maintenance.
Senator Mpigi Barinada called for transparency and accountability in infrastructure projects and urged similar initiatives in the South-East and South-South regions.
Akin Alabi, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, praised the Minister for addressing infrastructure challenges and improving project execution.
He assured that the National Assembly would maintain its oversight role to ensure accountability in government spending, especially regarding the 2024 budget.
The Ministry of Works also officially flagged off work on the Ondo section of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway.
