The Federal Government has introduced an initiative to support women with pregnancy complications by offering free cesarean sections and treatment for vesicovaginal fistula (VVF).

Professor Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, explained that the initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of Nigerians. The program seeks to reduce maternal mortality by ensuring that no woman dies due to the inability to afford essential medical care, including cesarean sections and other obstetric treatments.

The government has also committed to providing free surgical repairs for women suffering from VVF, a condition caused by pregnancy or childbirth that leads to urinary incontinence. Pate revealed that around 2,000 women have already benefited from these life-changing treatments.

154 certified health facilities across Nigeria are now offering free care for obstetric complications, while 18 centers are dedicated to providing free VVF surgeries, ensuring accessible and quality healthcare for women in need.
