The Nigerian Government has approved the establishment of the National Citizens Value Brigade across primary and secondary schools nationwide, aiming to address the erosion of morals and values among the youth.
An initiative to instil values that reflect Nigeria’s traditions and norms.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris on Monday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
Idris noted that the initiative is in response to concerns about rising misconduct among young people.
He emphasised that the gradual decline in values, especially among younger generations, necessitates a return to core national traditions.
Additionally, the government has mandated the introduction of a National Value Charter into school curricula at both basic and post-basic levels. This charter will focus on instilling values and standardising the teaching of national symbols, including the national flag and Naira notes.
The new curriculum will be integrated into civic education classes and is also expected to be adopted by government appointees during their orientation.
The National Orientation Agency will also lead efforts to reorient Nigerians on proper flag usage in public spaces.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman announced that the revised curricula will be implemented in October 2024.
He explained that the new framework will focus on skills and values to better prepare students for economic participation.
In addition, the FEC approved the construction of a new Senate building for the University of Ibadan, established in 1948.
The council also discussed the cost associated with running examinations by the National Examinations Council (NECO), highlighting the importance of supporting the educational sector.
