The Federal Government is making decisions to recruit 2,000 teachers per state annually to address the growing shortage of educators across Nigeria.

This initiative, which includes all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, amounts to a total of 74,000 new teaching positions.

According to the Ministry of Education, the government aims to implement this policy by December 2024.

The roadmap for the recruitment was disclosed on Friday in a document obtained by Saturday PUNCH.

The plan comes as 18 states reportedly failed to hire any new teachers in the past five years, exacerbating the issue of understaffed public schools.

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has also expressed concerns over the declining number of teachers in public schools nationwide.

To address the situation, the ministry’s roadmap highlights that each state will be required to hire a minimum of 2,000 qualified and certified teachers annually.

The Minister of State for Education is expected to meet with state governors to ensure the plan is successfully implemented.

The first phase of this recruitment initiative is scheduled for completion by December 2024.
