The Federal Government has cut the cost of renal dialysis by 20% at major federal hospitals across eight states, including the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ebute-Metta, Lagos; University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan; FMC Owerri; and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).

The initiative, part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the health sector, was announced by FMC Ebute-Metta Chief Medical Director, Dr. Adedamola Dada, and the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who previously served as Minister of State for Health.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Dr. Dada stated, “@FMC_EB (FMC Ebute-Metta) starts highly subsidised renal dialysis from today… The cost of dialysis has been reduced to 20 per cent of the normal cost, courtesy of PBAT. This programme is available nationwide.”

Dr. Alausa also confirmed the initiative, listing participating hospitals such as FMC Abeokuta, LUTH Lagos, UBTH Benin, FMC Azare, and UCTH Calabar.

He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for prioritising healthcare access for Nigerians.

Renal dialysis is critical for managing kidney failure, a condition exacerbated by global health challenges like hypertension and diabetes.

A recent WHO study highlighted the rising prevalence of kidney failure, especially in low-income countries, where the high cost of kidney replacement therapies strains healthcare systems.

The WHO emphasised the need for preventive measures, such as managing chronic kidney disease and addressing risk factors, while balancing investments in life-saving therapies like dialysis and transplantation.
