The Federal Government has partially paid the withheld salaries of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU) members, releasing one out of four months’ arrears, according to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF).

The payments come amid a nationwide strike by NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) over unpaid allowances, payroll issues, and delayed retirement benefits.

The OAGF stated that many NASU members have confirmed receipt of the recent payment, though only one month’s salary has been released so far.

The strike, which began in response to what the unions see as the government’s failure to fulfil prior agreements, has led to a shutdown of university activities nationwide.

The unions’ grievances include inconsistencies with the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), unpaid earned allowances, and outstanding minimum wage arrears.

SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim noted that key university officials, such as vice-chancellors, bursars, and registrars, also remain unpaid, compounding the impact on university operations.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU and NASU has insisted that the strike will continue until all demands are met.

The unions are urging university stakeholders to press the government to implement their agreed terms to avoid a “total breakdown of industrial harmony.”
