The Federal Government has pledged to establish mini-grids in higher institutions to reduce electricity costs and provide sustainable energy solutions for learning and research environments.

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, made this known during his inspection of the Advanced Solar Microgrid project at the University of Abuja.

Scheduled for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu in December, the project is 95% complete and will serve as a model for similar installations in other institutions and teaching hospitals nationwide.

Adelabu highlighted that reliable energy is crucial for education, economic growth, and industrial development.

He stated that the initiative reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to prioritising power and education as drivers of sustainable growth.

The solar project is expected to reduce reliance on the national grid and lower energy costs for beneficiary institutions.

Adelabu urged the University of Abuja to ensure proper maintenance of the facility, adding that its success will pave the way for replication in other institutions.

“We are confident this initiative will end the energy challenges faced by higher institutions and create a more conducive learning environment,” he added.
