The Federal Government has announced the implementation of the new minimum wage of ₦70,000, set to take effect from July 29, 2024.

This decision also includes a revision of the salary structure for lecturers, doctors, military personnel, and other civil servants.

The announcement follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Federal Government and the Labour Union on Friday.

A statement released by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), signed by Eno Olotu, Head of Information and Public Relations, confirmed the implementation date.

As part of the agreement, the committee on civil servants’ salaries recommended that the discontinued wage award be paid until July 28, 2024.

The committee, chaired by the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, noted that the government’s decisions were informed by the prevailing economic situation in the country.

Walson-Jack, speaking after the signing, expressed appreciation for the committee’s diligent efforts, commending both the Trade Union and Government sides for their cooperation in reaching the agreement.

She highlighted that both parties agreed on consequential adjustments to salaries based on the new minimum wage, adding that copies of the MoU had been signed by all members and handed over to representatives from both sides.

She also described the negotiations as one of the smoothest and quickest in recent times.

The signed MoU will now be forwarded to the Federal Government for further action.

Representing the Trade Union, Comrade Benjamin Anthony, National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the negotiations and commended the HCSF for the committee’s work.
