Vice President Kashim Shettima has announced that the Federal Government’s health sector reforms has attracted over $4.8bn in investments, reflecting President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to revitalise Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Speaking at the Commissioning and Grand Opening of Sahad Hospital’s in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the importance of uniting to improve the health sector and highlighted four key pillars of the government’s reform agenda: transforming healthcare governance, improving population health outcomes, unlocking the healthcare value chain, and strengthening health security.
“These reforms are anchored on a comprehensive roadmap designed to address longstanding challenges, and central to this are four key pillars: transforming healthcare governance, improving population health outcomes, unlocking the healthcare value chain, and strengthening health security”, Senator Shettima said.
Shettima also mentioned initiatives by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate, aimed at boosting domestic production of essential medical supplies and drugs, and doubling the number of fully functional healthcare centres nationwide.
However, he acknowledged persistent challenges such as high medicine costs, long hospital waiting times, and a shortage of health workers.
Vice President emphasised the crucial role of private sector investment in improving access to quality healthcare and generating job opportunities.
Additionally, he noted that the National Economic Council, under his leadership, is prioritising investments to develop Nigeria’s human capital, with health and nutrition being key thematic areas.
