The body governing football in the world, FIFA have intervened in the bonus situation concerning football federations and national teams playing at the ongoing Women’s World Cup.

FIFA has announced that the 2023 World Cup prize money will be paid directly to the players without any interference from a third party. This was confirmed in a video which was posted on the official Twitter account of a Nigeria sports journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana.

FIFA secretary-general, Fatma Samoura confirmed that the policy changes concerning the unpaid allowance issues were changed because of the Super Falcons.

Samoura said that things have been tough for the Falcons. She also added that for the first time, FIFA will monitor that match bonuses get to the players directly.

“I know that things have been tough. We have to face the realities of Nigeria. It pains me a lot. It is because of you [the Super Falcons] that, for the first time, the prize money has been ring-fenced in the history of FIFA to ensure that it goes to you.”
