Goodluck Jonathan Warns Against Suspension of Elected Officials in Rivers

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned that suspending elected officials in Rivers State could harm Nigeria’s global reputation and affect investor confidence.

Speaking at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday, Jonathan expressed concern over the ongoing political turmoil in the state, stating that actions by key government institutions influence the country’s image.

His remarks follow criticisms from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, who condemned President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and state lawmakers for six months. The governors described the move as unconstitutional and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

Jonathan, who typically refrains from commenting on political matters, said he felt compelled to speak out after calls from concerned Nigerians. He also criticised undue political interference in the judiciary, warning that it erodes public trust in the legal system.
