The House of Representatives will soon debate the “NYSC Trust Fund (Establishment) Bill 2024,” which aims to create a sustainable funding source for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to train and empower corps members.

Sponsored by a representative from Nasarawa State, the bill was read in the Green Chamber two weeks ago.

A copy of the bill, obtained by The PUNCH, outlines the purpose of the Trust Fund: to financially support NYSC’s skill acquisition, training, and empowerment programs for corps members, as well as to improve NYSC facilities and operations.

The fund would be sourced from 0.2% of Nigeria’s Consolidated Revenue Fund, along with grants, donations, and international aid.

The fund will support skill development and job readiness for corps members, provide NYSC personnel training, and improve facilities, including operational equipment and orientation camp needs.

A proposed Board of Trustees would manage the fund, including representatives from NYSC, federal ministries, the private sector, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and local government.

The board would oversee fund allocation, project approvals, and contract awards to enhance NYSC programs, training, and infrastructure.
