The House of Representatives will present ₦704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu on December 31, 2024, to support economically vulnerable Nigerians affected by the removal of the petrol subsidy.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, during Thursday’s plenary, announced that the lawmakers had fulfilled their pledge to donate 50% of their salaries for six months.

The initiative, approved on July 18, aimed to provide relief amid the economic challenges following the subsidy removal.

“This contribution highlights our commitment to addressing the needs of Nigerians.

The funds will be handed over to the President for exclusive use by vulnerable citizens,” Abbas stated.

The salary donation originated from a motion by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who proposed the measure as a response to growing hardship and public discontent.

Kalu had urged lawmakers to sacrifice half of their monthly ₦600,000 salary to support the initiative.
