Nigeria’s House of Representatives has intervened in the planned subscription rate increase by Multichoice, the provider of DStv and GOtv, directing the company to halt the price adjustment due to economic concerns.
The decision follows a motion presented by Esosa Iyawe, a lawmaker from Edo State (APC), who criticised the frequent price hikes imposed by the pay-TV operator. He highlighted that this would be the second increase within a year, noting that consumers had raised concerns over affordability and limited competition in the sector.
Multichoice had earlier announced a revised pricing structure set to take effect from March 1, with DStv Premium rising to N44,500 from N37,000, Compact+ increasing from N25,000 to N30,000, and Compact moving from N17,000 to N19,000.
In response, lawmakers directed Multichoice to suspend the price increase until a thorough review is conducted. They also instructed the Committee on Commerce to investigate the recurring fee adjustments and propose measures to ensure fair pricing for Nigerian consumers.
The committee has four weeks to submit its report.
