The Federal Government has announced the complete closure of the Ijora Bridge in Lagos starting April 27, 2025, to carry out essential repair work.

According to the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the project involves lifting sections of the bridge to replace approximately 50 defective bearings, which have caused noticeable vibrations.

“This is the final phase of a series of rehabilitation works. It involves lifting parts of the deck to replace around 50 defective bearings across three sections,” Kesha explained.

Kesha explained that although the bridge is not at risk of collapse, urgent attention is needed to prevent further damage. The repairs mark the first major overhaul since the bridge’s construction.

“Although there’s no immediate danger of collapse, the bridge is in urgent need of attention. The weakened bearings, similar to springs supporting the deck, are the cause of the vibrations many drivers have reported,” she explained.

To ease traffic disruptions, motorists from Ijora will be diverted through the Seven Up Roundabout, while trucks will be rerouted via Costain through Iganmu.

The ministry urged public cooperation, assuring that the closure is temporary and necessary for safety.

“This project is all about safety. We ask for the cooperation of Lagosians so we can complete it swiftly and restore the bridge to optimal condition,” she said.
