The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has requested additional funding from the Federal Government to aid preparations for the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this appeal on Friday while defending the commission’s 2025 budget proposal before the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Prof. Yakubu highlighted critical areas requiring funding, including, Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), logistics for off-cycle elections, replacement of damaged election materials such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), ballot boxes, and voting cubicles, and repairs of INEC offices in Local Government Areas
He stressed that 2025 is pivotal for laying the groundwork for the 2027 elections and emphasised the need for timely funding to ensure effective operations.
INEC also addressed concerns regarding reports about destroying over six million uncollected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from the 2015 voter registration, clarifying that such claims are false.
