Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a female resident doctor at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna State, has been released after spending 10 months in captivity.

She was abducted by bandits in December 2023, along with her husband, Nurudeen Popoola, a military officer, and her nephew, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugni.

Following their abduction, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of N40 million.

Though her husband was freed in March 2024 after the ransom was paid, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remained in captivity until their release on Wednesday evening.

Expressing joy and gratitude over her safe return, the President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Dr. Tope Osundara, thanked everyone involved in securing their freedom.

This incident highlights the rising concern over kidnappings and ransom demands in Nigeria, drawing attention to the ongoing security challenges faced by residents across the country.
