Veteran Nollywood actor and former Labour Party (LP) campaign spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has announced his exit from the party, citing leadership failures and internal conflicts.
In a statement on Tuesday, Okonkwo declared that the LP, as presently structured, cannot deliver the kind of governance he envisions for Nigeria.
“My entrance to politics is for good governance, and I will continue to work for it to ensure that Nigeria becomes a great country of incorruptible men,” he stated, adding that his objectives can no longer be achieved within the party.
Okonkwo also condemned the ongoing legal disputes within the LP, particularly the power struggle involving Julius Abure and the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee.
He described the internal wrangling as an attempt to stall the party’s progress ahead of the 2027 general election, asserting, “It’s more than six months after the inauguration of the committee, and it has not even taken off.”
Expressing his frustration with the party’s inability to reclaim seats lost to defections, he remarked, “A party whose elected members are defecting every day, yet its leadership focuses on internal legal battles rather than salvaging its political fortunes, is heading for doom.”
Okonkwo’s resignation will take effect on February 25, 2025, which marks the second anniversary of the 2023 presidential election.
He hinted at aligning with a different political platform, affirming, “I pledge my continued loyalty to the Nigerian people in all I will decide to do in my political future.”
