Tensions remain high in the Lagos State House of Assembly following a leadership tussle between Speaker Mojisola Meranda and her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa. The crisis deepened on Thursday when police authorities withdrew Meranda’s security details, only to reinstate them hours later.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, explained that the withdrawal was part of an ongoing personnel audit, assuring that it was not targeted at any individual. “The audit of the police personnel attached to Hon. Mojisola Meranda has been completed, and they have been restored for her protection,” he stated.
The withdrawal, however, coincided with Obasa’s reappearance at the Assembly complex, where he claimed he was never legally removed from office. Obasa, who was impeached in January over allegations of financial misconduct, was greeted by supporters chanting in his favour as he asserted his position.
“There was a peace meeting where Meranda openly agreed to step down,” Obasa claimed during a televised interview, arguing that her resignation justified the removal of her security detail. He maintained that due process was not followed in his removal and insisted, “I’ve never been removed.”
Despite Obasa’s stance, a majority of lawmakers have reaffirmed their support for Meranda. In a decisive move, thirty-six legislators passed a vote of confidence in her leadership, signaling that the crisis is far from over.
The Lagos Assembly has been embroiled in turmoil since February 17, when security personnel and legislative staff clashed within the House. With both factions standing firm, the battle for the speakership remains unresolved, leaving the fate of the Lagos State House of Assembly in a state of uncertainty.
