The former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has resigned from her position, stating that her decision was driven by the need to safeguard the integrity of the legislative body.

Announcing her resignation on Monday, Meranda explained that stepping down was a necessary sacrifice to uphold democratic principles and prevent further internal disputes within the Assembly.

She had assumed the role of Speaker on January 13, 2025, but her short tenure was overshadowed by leadership disagreements that threatened the House’s stability.

Emphasising her commitment to public service, she assured her constituents in Apapa Constituency 1 and Lagos State that she would continue serving in other capacities.

Meranda stressed that preserving the Assembly’s credibility was more important than clinging to power, adding that leadership often requires difficult but selfless decisions.

“As representatives of the people, our duty is to protect the democratic process and ensure effective governance. I have chosen to resign in the best interest of the House and the state,” she stated.

She also expressed gratitude to her colleagues, Assembly staff, and supporters for their solidarity throughout her tenure. Acknowledging the challenges faced, she urged fellow lawmakers to prioritise fairness and stability in their leadership approach.

Meranda concluded by reaffirming her dedication to Lagos State, stating that while she was stepping down as Speaker, she remained committed to public service.
