Traders operating beneath the Apongbon Bridge and along drainage setbacks in Lagos Island have been given 48 hours to vacate, following a directive from the Lagos State Government.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, issued the ultimatum during an inspection of the Savage/Elegbata Bombata drainage channel.
He decried the illegal conversion of the area into a livestock market and highlighted its negative impact on infrastructure maintenance.
According to a statement from the ministry, Wahab directed the immediate relocation of livestock traders to designated markets.
He also instructed officials to serve notices to traders encroaching on drainage setbacks, warning that enforcement actions would follow non-compliance.
During the tour, two buildings were sealed after materials were found blocking drainage channels.
Wahab ordered the occupants to clear the obstructions before the properties could be unsealed.
Addressing the issue of missing manhole covers, Wahab reassured residents that his ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Works to resolve the problem and safeguard public infrastructure.
