The Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has shown support for the state government’s decision to implement an ₦85,000 minimum wage for workers.
NLC Chairman, Agnes Funmi, welcomed the announcement, noting that while the figure was acceptable for now, the union also hopes the government will continue its efforts in infrastructure development, such as ongoing rail services projects.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the ₦85,000 minimum wage during an interview on Channels TV’s “One-On-One with Babajide Sanwo-Olu.”
He emphasised that the wage increase was aligned with the state’s financial capacity and that it was not a competition with other states.
Sanwo-Olu further expressed optimism about raising the minimum wage to ₦100,000 by January 2025, aiming to ensure workers earn a “living wage.”
He noted that the government would find ways to cut unnecessary expenses to provide workers with better pay.
This announcement comes amid ongoing negotiations between state governments and labour unions over the implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage approved by the Federal Government.
