The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, in collaboration with C40 Cities and the UK Government-funded Urban Climate Action Programme, is set to inaugurate a $90,000 biogas plant at Ikosi Fruit Market, Ketu.

The project, announced by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kunle Adeshina, aims to convert organic food waste generated at the market into biogas for energy production.

A biodigester will be constructed to curb environmental emissions, generate power, and improve market traders’ livelihoods.

State Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab emphasised the initiative’s dual benefits: reducing methane emissions and enhancing traders’ operations with a cold storage facility to preserve produce freshness.

The project also seeks to boost market efficiency by providing lighting and refrigeration in key areas.

Aditi Maheshwari, Managing Director for Climate Action Implementation at C40, expressed optimism about the project’s potential to attract further investments and scale city-wide.
