A lawyer representing suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Victor Giwa, has alleged that the Kogi State Government is behind efforts to recall her from the Senate.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television, Giwa claimed that Charity Omole, an aide to Governor Usman Ododo, is leading the recall campaign. On Monday, March 24, Omole and some constituents from Kogi Central submitted a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to initiate the process.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was suspended from the Senate for six months after a dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. She also accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim that Giwa says is the real reason for the recall effort.
Giwa argued that the recall process is being manipulated, stating that it is “tortuous and practically impossible” without fraudulent means. He emphasised that a genuine recall should come from the constituents, not the government.
He accused the state administration of orchestrating the move, saying, “It is more or less the government sponsoring this process, not the constituents, and that fundamentally faults the process.”
As of press time, the Kogi State Government has not responded to the allegations.
